Perhaps one of the most difficult things I’ve experienced as an entrepreneur?

Wanting to be someone that I’m not. 

 

Being embarrassed about the truth. 

I remember back in 2016 there wasn’t a bone in my body that cared that I was helping others with marketing. 

 

I didn’t have time to think about it because my back was against the wall.

As time went on, that changed. 

Being able to think, can be dangerous. 

 

Why? 

Because you overthink and when you overthink it can lead to self-sabotage. 

 

For me, as time went on, I wanted to become less and less as being seen as someone that could teach marketing…

 

As if teaching other people how to bring in more customers was “wrong”…

I’ve tried for years to distance myself from this…

 

To go away from talking about funnels…

To not consider myself as a coach, but rather a mentor…

I’ve spent a lot of energy trying to “position” myself as something else. 

 

And in truth, if I simply told people for the past 6 years that I could help them…

I probably would of been way more successful.

I think my Wife has a great point…

“I’m not sure anyone knows how to work with you… or that you can even help with their marketing”.

 

Part of me– my ego, has enjoyed that.

Because a part of me has judged what I’m part of…

The email automations…

The sale pages…

The ads…

The countdown timers…

The ___________________…

 

And… for a long time I’ve resisted accepting the truth. 

 

While I can help you on all areas of a business…

I really understand how to turn strangers into people who will pay you for what you do. 

 

And… I’m so good at it that I’ve built multiple frameworks that have helped a lot of people.. 

This has been a tough realization. 

I always had an inkling of this…

 

Why? 

Because I would always try to position myself around what I did instead of simply saying…

 

“Here’s how I can help you…” 

 

I would choose my ego and trying to stay away from being seen as someone that is a “marketer” over the clarity that I teach others, which is what is the key to being able to have peak relevancy. 

 

Recently, I promised myself to let go of that. 

Yes, I’m an investor. 

Yes, I’m a business owner. 

Yes, I’m an entrepreneur. 

Yes, I’m a coach.

Yes, I’m a mentor.

Yes, I’m an advisor.

Yes, I’m a multi-millionaire. 

And yes, I’m a marketer. 

I’m even a salesperson. 

 

The truth is…

We’re a lot of things. 

 

Sometimes, we aim to be something because we judge the belief around the identity. 

As if we’re not as good if we’re “that thing”. 

 

I’ve done that. 

And doing that, I’ve stopped the ability for so many people to be helped with what I’ve learnt. 

 

Thankfully it hasn’t hurt me on a business and financial level. 

However, it did hurt something even more important than that. 

 

A higher level of integrity to myself and a higher level of authenticity. 

Because… if you’re trying to be “seen” as something… it’ll never be possible to be fully authentic. 

 

Of course… until recently, I didn’t fully piece this together.

Which now, seems silly. 

 

But… truth is… 

I enjoy marketing. I enjoy the strategy. I enjoy being a scientist. 

And… I also enjoy P&L statements or combing through a contract. 

And… I enjoy talking people off the cliff of blowing up their business, or giving them advice on how to handle things in their business. 

 

I enjoy a lot of things and so do you.

 

But, why is this important? 

I believe it’s important for this singular reason.

Generally, the identity that is most effective for your business and for people “getting” what you’re about (aka. Relevancy) isn’t the identity you wish to be seen as. 

This is especially true as you’re successful. 

In reality, identity is perhaps one of the most difficult parts of having an online personal brand business. 

Why? 

At the beginning, it doesn’t matter. 

But eventually, you’ll obsess about it. 

And when you do, you’ll give up clarity and reason and relevancy…

 

All so that you can feel cool to your own ego when you read your own instagram bio. 

 

Clarity is the key to relevancy. 

Don’t let your ego be the enemy.
